about the zoo

ZooTwo is an interactive, semi chat semi virtual soap opera of a zoo. You can go through it two ways. One is as a voyeur-watching the animals interact with eachother in their environments, seeing who they interact with and who they chat with. Or, you can drive an animal, checking out one of the 29 animals that live in the zoo and take it where you want. As a driver, you can interact with the other animals, but you're constrained as to what you can make an animal say by what controls the animal's owner has put over it's mad lib style dialog.

The zoo was put together by the CSSSA digital arts majors and minors during the summer session 2000 at CalArts. Each student developed an animal, created an environment and a set of icons. They developed a profile for the animal and set it's vocabulary parameters, then created dialog for the animal to use.

Karl Ewald created the custom programming that runs the zoo in javascript and perl. Laura Hartwick was his loyal and trustworthy assistant in all non programming matters. They are the main instigators of the zoo and the digital arts professors.
